Description

Look out lego lovers!  The Robot Garage is coming our way.  Come build and program with Robot Garage staff using Lego WeDo software, Lego Techni, and Lego EV3 software.  Interactive STEM programs for children featuring technology and/or popular building toys using LEGO bricks.

Below is a list of the programs.  Each program is repeated twice on 2 different dates.

2nd-3rd Grade | 1 Hour Session

Motorized Catapult: Students will build a catapult out of Lego Technic pieces and then program it to load and launch with Lego WeDo software.  The catapult will utilize energy stored in the rubber bands to shoot a ball.  A motor and hears will be used to energize the rubber bands and then release them to launch the ball.  The program will utilize a motion senor to help control the motor.

Dates and Time

  • Monday, July 22nd | 9:00AM-10:00AM

  • Monday, July 22nd | 10:15AM-11:15AM

Race Car:  Students will build a catapult out of Lego Technic pieces.  The car will utilize gears to power all four wheels and a spinning flag used to observe the RPM of the motor.  After building the cars, students will race the cars using different sized wheels to learn how that affects the speed of the car.

Dates and Time

  • Friday, July 26th | 9:00AM-10:00AM

  • Friday, July 26th | 10:15AM-11:15AM

4th-5th Grade | 1 Hour Session

Free Throw Shooter:  Students will build a motorized Lego Technic free throw shooter and then program it, with Lego's WeDo software to shoot baskets.  The robotic free throw shooter will use a motor and gears to shoot the ball when a motion sensor is triggered.  Students will experiment to see how different gear-ratios will change the speed of the shot.

Dates and Time

  • Monday, July 22nd | 12:00PM-1:00PM

  • Monday, July 22nd | 1:15PM-2:15PM

Airplane Shooter:  Students will build a mechanical Lego Technic® paper airplane launcher. The launcher will use energy stored in rubber bands to propel the plane forward. The build will also utilize a latch and release in order to keep the energy stored until the plane is ready to fly. Students will then experiment by adding or further stretching the rubber bands to change the amount of stored energy and observe how these changes affect

Dates and Time

  • Friday, July 26th | 12:00PM-1:00PM

  • Friday, July 26th | 1:15PM-2:15PM

6th-8th Grade | 2 Hour Session

Mindstorms Robotic Arm

Students will build a 3-axis robotic arm and program it using the Lego EV3 software.  The robotic arm will be remote controlled with the buttons on the EV3 allowing the arms to:  move left and right, grab and release, and tilt up and down.  The arm is built in two parts, the gripper section, and the base section.

Dates and Time

  • Monday, July 22nd | 2:30PM-4:30PM

Sumo Robots:  Starting with a simple moving chassis, students design and build modifications to improve the robot and then compete with it in a sumo robot competition. After trying the robot out in their first battle students are challenged to iterate their design to compete more successfully in their next match.

Dates and Time

  • Friday, July 26th | 2:30PM-4:30PM
